Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013). This South African anti-apartheid revolutionary was imprisoned and then became a politician and philanthropist. Nelson Mandela served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold this leadership position after being elected in a fully representative election. He focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid, tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality while building racial reconciliation.
From humble beginnings as a cattle-boy, this legend with many names turned the course of a nation and became a global icon, a legend of our time. He was first called Rolihlahla, and then at 16 he was given the name Dalibunga, he is also known by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba and as Tata which means Father.
We say farewell to the father of our nation, rest in peace Tata Madiba.
