Tess Fernandez, public relations officer for Umgeni SPCA visited Capulum College today, accompanied by her adorable Pug dog Bentley, to teach our students the importance of caring for their pets.
Tess pointed out that some people leave their dogs in cars while shopping which is dangerous and potentially life threatening as dogs are only able to perspire through their paws and when in a vehicle, which heats up very quickly even in winter, can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and potentially death.
The children grasped first-hand how quickly Bentley overheated requiring regular sips of water, while outdoors and under the shade of a large tree. The children understood how much worse it would be if Bentley was sitting in a parked car in a parking lot.
Tess explained that the SPCA does extremely valuable work assisting the Howick and Hilton communities by offering medical care and attention to animals whose owners are unable to afford veterinary fees. In addition to offering medical care, the SPCA responds to phone calls from concerned members of the community who may be concerned that animals are being mistreated or have been abandoned. The SPCA rehabilitates and attempts to find new homes for these animals.
In conclusion Tess urged all Capulum students to volunteer their time at the SPCA whether to walk the dogs or just play with them. She also appealed to all the students to continue caring for their pets responsibly.
Capulum students were thanked for their generosity in donating an entire car-boot full of dog and cat food, leashes and collars collected during terms 2 and 3.
