The following is an email received from FrackFree South Africa, for those of us who missed it, and the recent article in the Mercury. A reminder will be sent out to the data base next week, but the meeting for our area is scheduled to take place at the Howick West Community Hall on Tuesday, 2nd February at 14H30.
Well, not the actual guys in hardhats with drilling rigs.
Just Phillip Steyn of Rhino Oil & Gas, an entrepreneur who wants a permit to explore for oil and gas, and who will sell this concession (in his words "moneytise'), if and when he finds anything, to the highest bidder.
We need to once again let them know that we will not allow them to explore. The methods used to explore include seismic surveys which damage soil organisms and ecosystems. Besides, South Africa's commitment at CoP21 to phase-out fossil fuels and fast-track renewables, means that there is absolutely no scope for adding additional fossil fuel resources into our energy-mix. All new investment into energy resources must go into renewables.
This is no time to presume that someone else will be preventing unconventional gas exploration and extraction from affecting our health, the quality of water we drink and the air we breathe, while further placing our food security at risk. It is up to us.
Once they explore and find something, whatever follows will most certainly be detrimental to human and environmental health.
