Last Saturday, dancers from Tracey Academy of Irish Dance in Hilton took part in the NSG Championships as well as undertaking their grade examinations. KZN was privileged to host the adjudicator, Francis Curley, from Dundalk, Ireland. KZN teachers enjoyed a wonderful dinner with Mr Curley at the Roma Revolving Restaurant on the Friday night.
Dancers arrived early in Pinetown on Saturday to compete in the long-awaited competition and championships. The day brought incredible results from Tracey Academy. The hall erupted when Aamilah Khunoethe-Wimpey and Sbo Maphumulo were announced as Natal champions. “I have never heard such cheering at a KZN competition before. The sense of community is strong with Hilton dancers and their families,” said Erin Tracey.
Hannah Matthews from Lion’s River placed second in her championship and also won many gold medals in the competition section. Charlotte West placed fourth in her championship while her sister, Ashleigh, received third place. The Academy brought home eleven gold medals as well as many placings by Rachel Ekerold, Sabrina Barnes, Sarah Matthews, Emily Napier, Megan Napier, Sandiswa Shandu and Sandi Mtshali!
Mr Curley made a special mention to Sbo Maphumulo during his speech to the KZN Irish Dance community. He was inspired by Sbo’s dancing and encouraged him to continue being the show stopper that he is! At the age of 11, Sbo is currently the only male Irish Dancer in KZN!
Later that day the dancers proceeded to take on their grade examinations. Erin was proud to announce that all dancers received distinctions and honours with the top score being achieved by Ashleigh West who earned herself two high distinctions in her grade two and three exams.
Tracey Academy will now be preparing for the SA Irish Dance Championships to be held in Johannesburg at the end of September. See the dancers perform at the Hilton Arts Festival on the 18th of September!
