Grade 8 St Anne’s student, Zoë Frank, participated in the Four Elements Ocean Challenge over the weekend. The 6km swim starts at Durban Underwater Club near the Harbour wall and finishes just past the Moses Mabhida Stadium.Despite being an incredibly long and gruelling challenge, Zoë was placed 1st in the Women’s Open Division in a time of 1:10.22 and was placed 3rd overall with the men and woman combined. There were 91 swimmers including some well-known names who participated in the challenge.
The conditions were less than suitable with seriously inclement weather that included cold temperatures, gale force winds and huge swells. Zoë says the challenge was incredibly tough and at times she had to negotiate the sandbanks, the reef and at one stage they were out past the shark nets.
The purpose of the event is to raise funding for conservation awareness.
