At the AGM of the Hilton Ratepayers' Association, a presentation was given by Kevin Meier, Manager of Planning Services at Umgeni Water. The presentation shows that we are fortunate in having the high quality of engineering expertise at the various institutions responsible for our water supply. Without long term planning and current emergency measures, the water supply situation would be considerably worse than it is. The presentation can be downloaded here.
The HRA was asked some time ago to communicate with local residents and stress the need to save water and reduce consumption. We suggested that we could not do so without a background of information. This presentation shows that the current drought is a 1 in 200 year event and that without significant voluntary reductions in water consumption, forced reductions will become increasingly necessary to avoid a complete failure of the water supply system. The HRA will try to distribute key data at regular intervals from now on until it starts raining again and the situation returns to normal.
