Bridget Krone, author of ‘Small Mercies’ visited Grade 6 pupils at Cowan House
‘Small Mercies’ is one of our set novels this year and Grade 6s have enjoyed the book and related well to the characters, especially Mercy, who is the 11 year old protagonist of the story. Bridget lives in Hilton, and her book is set in Pietermaritzburg, so we had the privilege of chatting to, and interviewing, a South African author. ‘Small Mercies’ has received numerous awards, including the Kirkus literary award of ‘one of the best books of 2020’.Bridget shared tips on writing, as well as the history, background and characters in ‘Small Mercies’. Grade 6s enjoyed asking a multitude of questions and could have spent more than an hour sharing their viewpoints and learning from a wonderful writer. We already have a copy in the library of Bridget’s new book ‘The Cedarville Shop and the Wheelbarrow Swap’ which Grade 6s can’t wait to read!
A warm thank you to Bridget Krone who so willingly gave of her time to connect with Cowan House readers.

Pop-up gallery at Rotunda breaks artistic ground
The first pop-up gallery in the KZN Midlands opened its doors in the Rotunda, the iconic centre at the Cedara on-ramp onto the N3. Established jointly by artists Kathy Jacob and Simon Addy, the Studio Gallery aims to give artists more exposure. Students at Jacob’s studio will also benefit from the exposure.“We’re off the beaten track and may not draw the crowds, but the idea is to give it a go, and see where it goes,” said Jacob.
No stranger to taking the plunge and breaking new ground, Jacobs also founded the inaugural Art in the Country selling exhibition at Harrington House in Hilton earlier this year.
“They’re very different entities, but we’re hoping to stimulate and encourage the latent artistic talent in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands,” she said.
The initiative struck a chord with several works being snapped at the official opening of the Studio Gallery last week (Nov 1).
“I’m excited by the early-stage interest, and we’ll promote it heavily among artists and on social media,” said Jacob.

A bustle of picinics, birthdays and a wedding at Where the Crows Nest
The recent bustle of events at Where the Crow’s Nest has included picnics, birthdays and a wedding - all starring homemade food by Maryna. This chef thrives on providing feasts that are always different and she is inspired by the challenge of new and different requests presented by each group that books an event to cater out or enjoy on site.
Pictured above is a carrot cake, with cream cheese icing, of course. But that is standard at Where the Crows Nest, so to define this carrot cake it was accompanied by an arrangement of chai and chocolate truffles, Kourabiedes (Greek shortbread biscuit crescents), chocolate brownies, blueberries and strawberries.
This style of celebration has enjoyed combinations of cheese platters served with sourdough bread, smoked red pepper pate, olive tapenade, peanut chutney, hummus, pepperdew chutney, marmalade, honey, anti-pasta, curried leg of lamb kebabs, biltong, dry wors as well as individual mushroom, feta and caramelised onion tartlets. All homemade and never mundane.
Waiting in the kitchen is Maryna’s own Turkish Delight confection, it has been tested and is ready to be plated up.

Laughter really is the best medicine for mental wellbeing
After two and a half years of being locked down in isolation due to Covid-19, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that individual wellbeing is now firmly on top of the mental health agenda.
Taking care of the human mind as well as the body not only helps maintain good health, but also keeps us happy, makes us feel in control and ensures we have the tools and support to successfully overcome difficulties and achieve what we want out of life.
Larry Soffer, the leading Mentalist in Africa explains that during the recent pandemic, both resources and options were few. Many people were forced to take things into their own hands, finding new ways to entertain themselves, especially after the lure of Netflix wore off. “I saw so many of my friends and family start baking banana breads, take up gardening, or start a new hobby like making jewellery or creating pottery. A few have since turned these side hustles into profitable businesses which is just amazing,” he laughs.
Now that we have been unmasked, and things are open and almost back to normal, Larry and many like him hope that people go back to being entertained in the ways they know and love. Even at a time when many South Africans are tightening their financial purse strings, due to the escalating cost of living crisis, the important role the entertainment industry can play in helping improve and support mental health and wellbeing cannot be overlooked.
“It really is a gamechanger. After all, they do so say that laughter is the best medicine, and you can see why. Entertainment, especially live entertainment, is the ultimate feel-good factor and the perfect way of escaping from our everyday routines. It is also about sharing elements of fun and lightness and emotional connection with a room full of others,” he adds.
Here are Larry’s five reasons why entertainment is so important to mental health
and wellbeing:
1. We just can’t help ourselves
We can trace entertainment back to the first and second centuries where hand puppets, storytelling, music and dance was very much a part of the social fabric of society. Entertainment has always been a part of who we are as humans, Larry says it is because we desire fun and laughter in our lives.
2. We are wired to seek out things that bring us joy
And, being entertained delivers this in truckloads! You only need to look at a young infant to see what I mean. They get so much joy from simply watching a cartoon on TV, playing peek-a-boo with an adult or even from seeing their own reflection in the mirror. It’s all entertainment for them and it can bring them hours of fun and laughter.
3. We always need a break from reality
We get so consumed by everyday stressors that we long for those small moments or activities that relieve us from that. For some, it helps to spend time in the gym while others might want to be outside at one with nature. Entertainment is different though as it has the possibility to transport us out of our everyday mundane lives and into a world where we can experience magic and mystery, and where we can believe in the impossible.
4. Entertainment works around you
From comedians, singers and ventriloquists to dancers, musicians, and magicians, pretty much all artists had some form of online offering during the lockdown. Some were conducted in their living rooms, others on balconies or gardens, but all happened because as entertainers, we understand the need to spread joy and positivity during very difficult times.
This is the determined spirit of an artist – they simply cannot be stopped and will always find a way to express their craft. I know I absolutely loved entertaining during the lockdown, seeing packed out living rooms full of family and friends all desperate for some respite from the worry and doom.
5. As human we naturally gravitate to positivity and the desire to be uplifted
How many of us live for the weekend, so that we can plan something fun, different, and exciting over our two free days? We do it, because we get so much positive energy from a good experience or from being with good people. If you’re feeling happy and positive, you’re likely to radiate and transfer these happy feelings to someone else – like a domino effect, which is a great way of elevating everyone’s mental health and wellbeing.
Larry inspires his audiences to believe in the impossible so that they can achieve their dreams. Follow @LarrySoffer or visit his website for more information at www.larrysoffer.com.

There has been a buzz of Eco Kids activities at Cowan House
Our Eco Kids (as part of our Eco Committee) came up with two initiatives that they wanted to oversee as projects. Firstly, a class roster was created to tidy up the school and each class completed a litter pick up during one break each term. Each grade was designated an area and the Eco committee members helped and supervised this activity.Secondly, our Eco Committee hosted a market to sell things that would create awareness for the environment in various ways. Every second Wednesday of term 3 and 4, the Eco committee got together to work on their Eco market products held in the 4th Term.
The boys and girls made bee homes out of wood, which will give solitary bees a safe place in the garden to lay their eggs so that they can pollinate the flowers. The eco firelighters were made out of used tea bags and our boys and girls collected and recycled glass jars to fill with these, and liquid paraffine. Strawberry and indigenous sweet pea bushes were also also, which act as food for the pollinators.
A big thank you to all of our Cowan House children (as well as our Eco Committee) for creating a market which was both educational and inline with our Eco School status.

Louw and Lotter make statement in first aQuellé Midmar Mile seeding swim
The first seeding swim for next year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile took place at a pristine new venue – Prime View Adventure & Leisure – in Midrand on Sunday.
Pretoria swimmers Henré Louw and Callan Lotter made a statement of their intentions for the 50th anniversary of the event at Midmar Dam from 9-12 February next year, powering to commanding victories in their respective categories.
Swimming as a combined men’s and women’s 1.2km race Louw led the pack from early on and finished in a time of 13 minutes 45, a full 45 seconds clear of second-placed Rossouw Venter, who was just three seconds ahead of Reino von Wielligh.
Speaking after the race, Louw, who has come back from injury and also won the 3km race earlier in the day, said: “This shorter swim was fun. Getting back into the cold water was a bit of a challenge and the wind picked up a little bit from this morning, but it was definitely a good swim.
“My plan was to go out very quick and set the pace for myself and take it from there and see how I felt after the first 200m.”
As for next year’s Midmar Mile, the 20-year-old added: “This is definitely good preparation for Midmar next year. I’m looking forward to the 50th anniversary and racing hard and giving it my all.”
16-year-old Lotter finished fifth overall in the mixed field and was the first woman home in a time of 14:57 with Carli Antonopoulos 40 seconds back in second in 15:37 and 14-year-old Karla Myburgh third in 15:53.
Lotter said she was expecting to come out on top and is looking forward to swimming her first ever aQuellé Midmar Mile next year.
“I’m hoping for a win there. I was supposed to do it this year but then it was too close to Nationals. So I decided to plan everything else so that I can go and swim Midmar next year,” said Lotter, who also finished second in the 3km event on Sunday.
Fellow Pretoria swimmer Reino van Wielligh completed every competitive event on offer over the weekend, from 1.2km up to 7.5km – finishing top three in all of them. The 29-year-old is preparing to take on a remarkable sixth straight 16-Mile Charity Challenge to raise money for Happy Bundles in 2023.
“I’m feeling quite well. I think it’s good training for the 16-mile next year at Midmar. Obviously I’m using the 16-mile to swim for charity and helping those children who are affected by cancer,” he said.
Speaking about Prime View Adventure & Leisure as a new venue, Von Wielligh added: “To me personally, I think it’s one of the cleanest dams or lakes that I’ve swum in in Gauteng so I’m looking forward to more events being here. It’s open for the public so hopefully in the future we can do some training here as well because it’s clean and already set up.”
Meanwhile, also in the field over the weekend were two swimmers who have been part of the fabric of the aQuellé Midmar Mile over the years, 84-year-old Anne Hanson and 81-year-old Derek Fyfe, who will be swimming his 31st Midmar Mile next year. A fit-looking Fyfe came out top in the 71 and over category in the 1.2km swim after finishing in 27 minutes 26.
Race Director Wayne Riddin was pleased with the weekend’s proceedings. “Working with Gauteng Open Water Swimming, I’m quite thrilled with it. They’ve welcomed it because we’re in the sport together and I hope that we can do the same thing in KZN,” he said, also commenting on the impressive level of swimming on display, particularly from the TUKS swimmers.
The next seeding event, for those wanting a good starting position in next year’s race, will take place at Baynesfield Dam in KwaZulu-Natal on the weekend of 12-13 November.
Swimmers are reminded to enter next year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile by midnight on Sunday, 30 October to enjoy the lower entry fee. Visit www.midmarmile.co.za for all the details.
