In recent months,
Hilton SAPS together with armed response companies and volunteer community members have established a very effective Safety & Security network in Hilton resulting in the reduction in incidents of crime from over 40 per month to less than five.
The Umgeni Community Safety Initiative (UCSI) has installed five Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera gantries at the five main entry/exits points to Hilton, which are monitored 24/7, resulting in several successful arrests having been made.
The Hilton Community Security Initiative (HCSI), through its Hilton Street hawks (HSH) projects, funded by committed community members, continues to install CCTV camera gantries, contributes towards the monthly opex costs of four of the UCSI gantries and continues to install steel palisade fencing to secure vulnerable areas. The HCSI is also involved with the removal of undergrowth used by criminals to hide in or to stash stolen goods.
In Winterskloof, the Winterskloof Sector Forum (WSF), funded by committed community members, employs the Winterskloof Tactical Surveillance Unit (WTSU) to carry out security operations in the area. The WSF also contributes towards the monthly opex cost of a UCSI gantry.
Both the WSF and the HCSI are currently the main income generating bodies towards Hilton’s Safety & Security network.
The Hilton Community Neighbourhood Watch (HCNW) consists of a network of security related Whatsapp groups throughout Hilton, as well as the unique and very successful Hilton Rapid Response (HRR) unit working in conjunction with Hilton SAPS’ Vispol unit.
The latest addition to Hilton’s Safety & Security network, and in line with the SAPS’ “Community in Blue” (CIB) concept, is the Joint Operating Centre (JOC) which can call upon signed-up Hilton residents to either carry out patrols in Hilton and surrounding forests and plantations, or to man strategic points in Hilton at very short notice if/when required. The JOC and the HCNW have access to sophisticated surveillance equipment and communications systems funded by the HCSI.
A Hilton resident recently made himself and his helicopter available to the Hilton JOC to be used for aerial surveillance and trouble-spotting, as and when required.
The HCNW, on behalf of the Hilton community, is in the process of joining the Midlands Safety & Security (MSS) network to improve communications between local communities, to share information and resources and to strengthen and improve everyone’s ability to deal with crime and civil unrest in the area.
The security related initiatives in Hilton essentially fall under the Hilton Community Police Forum (HCPF) which is part of the National Community Police Forum.
To ensure the continued sustainability of the above Safety & Security network, funds are always required. The committed community members of the HCSI & WSF are encouraged to continue their financial support of these two community projects.
