The Hilton College Golf Club has had the great privilege of having Don Gammon, from Ultra Simple Golf fame, out for two days doing a coaching clinic for the boys. Twenty of these boys will leave on the 25th of March to Thailand to participate in the World Schools' Golf Challenge. Don spent the afternoon not only helping the odd problematic swing, but refining many of the fantastic swings the boys already possess.

Don spent many years on the Pro circuits around the world and Don and his father Muss Gammon are two of the best known golf teachers in South Africa. His expertise was very well received by the boys, his vast knowledge of course management and how to plot your way around the course was enlightening. Don is a very humble man with a passion for junior golfers, and even spoke about how willing he was for the boys to use him as a resource, he is happy to receive emailed video's, analyze them and send back drills and fixes. A great offer indeed! He has also spent time with the other golfers, non-touring, and assisted them with their swings.

Don will be at school on Thursday for the second instalment of the clinic. Thank you so much to Dave Woollam for arranging these clinics and to Mr Gammon for giving up his valuable time to coach our boys.

Laddsworth Primary School in Hilton celebrated its 110th anniversary early in March. As part of its commemorations, all of the school's 564 pupils walked the short distance from the school to the garden of remembrance at the Hilton Anglican Church. There they laid flowers on the memorial stone of the school's founder, Daisy Ladds, whose remains are interred there.

Ladds started the school on the verandah of her home in Hilton Road village in 1903 with 20 pupils.

Grace College pupils participated in the Pietermaritzburg and District Inter-schools' chess league, which was held at St. Charles. Two of our pupils came in the top three of their respective leagues. Tino Mahomva (Gr 11), shared second position in the B-league and Micah Ilett (Gr 8), came third in the C-league. Grace is very proud of their achievements and wishes them well for the next league that just started.

Co-Owner of Eat In with Eatons, Paul Eaton visited Sunfield Home in Howick last week for his first interactive baking experience with the residents at Sunfield Home.

Paul said, 'My first day with the residents at Sunfield Home was truly inspirational, I enjoyed reaching out, giving back and seeing how much it can improve the lives of others. So I am looking forward to working with the groups regularly over the coming months.'

Paul will be baking with the Sunfield residents on a Wednesday and Thursday, there will be a rotation system set up for groups of 5 at a time so everyone who wishes to cook with Paul will have a turn.

Karen Lister of Sunfield Home said, 'The residents loved the time with Paul, they made the best cupcakes and cookies and he has offered to help with baking for up comings cake sales in the shop and our annual May Fair. We were very impressed with Paul's easy manner and the way he dealt with our residents.'

The Budget Speech 2013, by Finance Minister Pravine Gordhan, was presented on the back drop of difficult international economic times. South Africa needs to prove, to the international community, that it has sound business practices and the ability to carry them out over the medium to long term.

With unsettled workers in many industries and the incessant call for nationalisation over the past year, the international community has had concerns about investing in long term capital investments in South Africa. This has hampered job growth and caused further unrest.

National Development Plan (NDP)
From the outset of his speech Mr Ghordon reffered to the National Development Plan (NDP) as the means of an increased GDP and tried to allay fears of nationalisation with much emphasis on the need of the private sector.

There will be a reshuffle of expenditure to fall in line with the NDP thus preventing the need to increase overall taxes.

A strong warning was issued to government departments to implement infrastructure plans and spend the funds allocated to these development projects. At the same time mention was made that any new plans will have to be two years old before being considered. Is this a way of delaying further development for two years to save funds?

Does South Africa have a plan, the international community has asked? The Finance Minister has answered yes, the NDP. Heavy emphasis was placed on the need for the private sector in our economy. The NDP and the economy needs the private sector to succeed.

They, together with our runners-up, Julia van der Riet, Kalenda Opai-Tetteh, Charlotte Soverall and Hannah Moxham (all from FB!) will be taking part in the final at Clifton College on 18 April.

Hilton College won two gold medals at the SA Schools Rowing Championships held at Roodeplaat this weekend. Kyle Schoonbee and Emile McLennan won gold in the open double to add to Kyle's gold in the open skulls. Hilton also earned two bronze medals, one in the Open quad (Emile McLennan, Kyle Schoonbee, Stuart Bulterman, Joshua Hodgson & Daniel von Hoesslin) and a second for Matthew Gearing in the Open skulls.

The SA Schools Championships is a premier event and the culmination of the schools rowing season. Schools from around the country compete for the coveted medals and a shot at selection to the national squad. Regional selections take place next weekend followed by national selections on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of March.

Nicolson's Country Café at Garlington in Hilton hosted the HiltonVillage.co.za Business Network Meeting this week. The refreshing view and cooling breeze on their veranda was a welcome respite from the unusually high temperature experience earlier on the day.

Tanya Nicolson managed the food and impressed everyone with the most tender mini kebabs and sauce, pate, pita triangles, marinated olives, butternut phyllo pastry parcels and crispy salad. Well done and thank you Tanya for being a gracious and attentive host.

Our featured speakers were Di Aldworth of The Green Herb Co and Dee Davis, Cowan House's Marketing Manager. Di shared titbits of how the plant world offers a wealth of healing power, explaining simple home remedies that everyone can use. Dee reminded us of our own childhoods as she shared what she finds magical about Cowan House, a school where learners are encouraged to be children and may on occasion be found having a lesson perched in the branches of a large and comfortable tree.
