At Hilton Family Dental Care, our focus is on the oral health of the entire family and because kids have different needs than that of adults, our dentists have paediatric training too. Our rooms are kid friendly with televisions and toys bringing focus away from the impending consult. Our children’s dentist in Hilton does not clamp forward with the consult immediately but spends a fair bit of time engaging with the child and explaining the importance of healthy teeth to them.
Our dentist offers a wide variety of treatments. We do, after all cater to all age ranges, but the following are specific to children’s needs.
Preventative– keeping to a daily home brushing routine and visiting our children’s dentist in Hilton twice a year is a sure-fire way to keep teeth healthy and free of decay. Children should be brought in for their first visit when a few teeth have erupted. This way, our dentist will impart the correct process for a home routine. This should be kept up every six months. Within this time period, our childrens dentist is able to remove plaque and tartar build-up easily without having to drill into the teeth to have it removed. A good home brushing routine is a good basic start to maintaining healthy white teeth. To supplement this, preventative treatments are suggested. This way our dentists can do a full scale check of the mouth and advise if there are any areas that are maybe not being paid as much attention. They can even do a fluoride treatment to help prevent this build-up in the first place.
Restorative– if your kids have not been visiting the dentist as regularly as they should then they may develop cavities. This decayed portion of the tooth can cause sensitivity and will continue to rot away. The tooth, thankfully, can be restored by our children’s dentist in Hilton. The decay will be drilled out and then filled with a dental filling paste. It is hardened to the same degree of the tooth and then shaped and polished. It will look just like a normal tooth as the composite filling used by our dentists are individually mixed for each patient to match their tooth colour. Fillings can also be used to fix a tooth which has cracked or if a portion has been chipped off.
Dental sealant– another preventative measure to cavities is a sealant. It is a coating of a thin layer of plastic over the top of molars. Generally, this area is prone to cavities because food particles can easily become stuck in the tiny grooves, especially since these teeth are responsible for chewing food. A dental sealant allows for this to no longer be a problem.

It has been called the silent killer. High blood pressure causes organ damage and the most susceptible organs include the eyes, the heart and the kidneys. Cats especially suffer from blood pressure abnormalities. Causes of high blood pressure includes diseases such as hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, cushings disease, heart disease and essential hypertension where no cause is found. Measuring blood pressure in animals has been difficult and inaccurate due to movement issues. This has been resolved using computer generated impulses that record each pressure pulse in a blood pressure measurement allowing for operator and computer elimination of inaccuracies. Blood pressure should be measured in all animals at least 1-2 x a year. And in sick animals a variable amount of times per day depending on the condition. For routine screening of animals for blood pressure issues a nurses consultation is booked at reception. The animal’s blood pressure is recorded and abnormalities are reported to a veterinarian who will decide on the most appropriate course of action with you. This course of action may lead to the early diagnosis of some of the life threatening diseases already mentioned. An early diagnosis if acted upon will in most cases lead to more successful and often less costly therapy.

The Ashburton Aloe Festival will be held in the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd July and coincides with the blooming of the wild Aloe Candelabra. This beautiful bushveld area near Ashburton, ten kilometres east of Pietermaritzburg, was declared the first Protected Environment in KZN in 2011. It is home to a large number of wildlife and birds. This year, six venues will be open to the public between 9am and 4pm.
Over 80 000 Southern African high school pupils participated in the Maths Olympiad and we are proud to announce that 80 of our Junior Boys (Grade 8 and 9) and 113 of our Senior Boys (Grade 10, 11 and 12) were awarded with a qualification into the second round of the Olympiad.

Laddsworth would like to thank all the participants, sponsors, and the Hilton community who helped to make our annual Fun Night Run/Walk on the 15th June 2016 such a big success. There were 810 entrants who enjoyed a run/walk through the village of Hilton and the St Anne’s College Wetland. We had beautiful weather and there were lots of fun and laughter along the way. Grade 8 St Anne’s student, Zoë Frank, participated in the Four Elements Ocean Challenge over the weekend. The 6km swim starts at Durban Underwater Club near the Harbour wall and finishes just past the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Last Saturday, dancers from Tracey Academy of Irish Dance in Hilton took part in the NSG Championships as well as undertaking their grade examinations. KZN was privileged to host the adjudicator, Francis Curley, from Dundalk, Ireland. KZN teachers enjoyed a wonderful dinner with Mr Curley at the Roma Revolving Restaurant on the Friday night.
Four St Anne’s girls have achieved their Gold President’s Award, three of whom attended a ceremony held in Johannesburg recently where HRH Prince Edward presented them with their awards.
