94 bed facility to boost quality healthcare delivery for local community and KwaZulu-Natal province at large.Johannesburg, South Africa: Life Healthcare Group, one of South Africa’s largest private hospital operators, today (14 September) opened the doors to its newest hospital to date – Life Hilton Private Hospital based in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal. The 94 bed multidisciplinary hospital will enhance Life Healthcare’s patient-care offering in the greater area with five operating theatres and over 40 associated resident specialists.

Backed by the support of 11 oncologists from the KZN region, a high tech oncology unit (to be opened mid 2016) will include a cutting-edge radio-oncology device, the Novalis Tx. The Novartis-Tx produces radiation, which enters the patient from the outside and targets the tumour on the inside. It has the technology to make its treatment as accurate as possible, and has an array of imaging tools to ensure precision.

This 3 acre garden has a distinctive olde world charm centred around mature trees and azaleas. The area around thePurdon house is formal with soft plantings of roses and perennials. This leads off into colourful informal borders and shrubberies. It is an old Hilton property with mature magnolia, cherry and maple trees and a mix of formal, informal and old-fashioned planting. The garden layout has been largely done by Mike Hammersley and Sue Tarr.
The genesis of Chris Perold’s book The Private World of Normand Dunn stems from the author’s four-year friendship with the artist, an involvement which has continued to deepen and grow in the period of more than twenty-five years since the artist’s death. The prolonged study of Dunn’s painting has convinced the writer that the assessment of the artist’s work, up to the time of his death, fell short of a true appreciation of its worth. Critics saw little beyond the anecdotal nature of the paintings, the fun, the ‘naivety’ and the delight. This was the public face of Dunn’s work: beneath it, the author contends, lies a private world of even greater significance, a world in which the essential elements of our being are examined, depicted and, by implication, commented upon – all with a gently satirical eye. It is this re-assessment which forms the basis of Chris’s book, illustrated with reproductions and commentaries on more than one hundred of the artist’s paintings. This book, he hopes, will help to accord to Normand Dunn his rightful place in the annals of South African art.
The Grade One classes at Laddsworth Primary School visited Carwin Farm. The children were shown the dairy farm where they learnt about the processing of milk and dairy products, watching the cows being milked is always fascinating. They viewed maize, silage and rye grass fields and rode on a trailer behind a tractor.
Local lady Keri Maxfield shared her Pickle Club idea using Facebook and inspired 15 picklers to meet up for a taste test and share evening at Old Main Brewery. Thanks is due to OMB management for accommodating the group in a function room and to Des Yeoman who showed us all how pasta can easily be made at home.
Two boys at Laddsworth Primary School, Kyle Bullock in Grade 6 and Michael Finch in Grade 5 have earned their Leaping Wolf badges, this is the highest acclaim a Cub can be awarded. This is also the only badge from Cubs that can be worn on the Scout uniform.

Wattle trees have choked some stretches of the Umgeni, and threaten the demise of a fine trout stream. Wattles contribute tannins, fall into the river, shade the water, and due to the barren nature of the ground beneath them, contribute significantly to siltation. Siltation stops trout from breeding, and wattle trees also suck huge amounts of water from the system, exacerbating low winter flows.
Each year Grade 5 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School are given the opportunity to share and celebrate all their different heritages. They come to school wearing outfits from different South African cultures as well traditional costumes from all around the world. The children enjoy traditional South African food and participate in dance, music and games of varied origins making for a diverse and rich educational experience.
Former provincial rugby player, current Hilton College Director of Coaching and GM of the Investec International Rugby Academy, Greg Miller, along with many other rugby icons will be sharing their knowledge and expertise as part of the academy’s December Holiday courses at St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg.
Grade 6 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School made cheerful spring hats for their teachers, who appear to have had even more fun wearing the hats.
It was the first time that both Oakleigh Funeral Homes and I wanted to do this workshop. It was held on Saturday the 5th of September, at the Oakleigh Funeral Home Chapel. Response was really good, certainly something we would do again as it was a free workshop. We did a one stop shop of information when people die.
Kendra Tongue in Grade 2 at Laddsworth Primary School competed in the Glenwood Gymnastics Club Invitational Competition where she was awarded a medal for her Level 1 achievement in the U8 age group.
Grace College Deputy Head Girl, Ki-An Kambaran, has been selected for the KZN Girls' U19 Soccer Team. We wish them well as they prepare to participate in a tournament in Gauteng from 2-5 October. "Congratulations Ki-An, you keep on doing us so proud!"
