On Monday, 3rd of August, iThemba preschool opened it's bright blue doors to the first of many children. This is a dream come true for the staff and supporters of iThemba Projects, that has been working toward this goal since the Nkosi (chief) of Sweetwaters gave a piece of land to them 8 years ago, with the request that they build a community centre and a creche on it. The preschool, built by locals using the rammed earth method, is spacious and beautiful and will eventually be able to accommodate 70 preschoolers. The classroom is filled with toys, bright books and giggles of children at play. The playground, overlooking the hills and valleys so typical of Sweetwaters, is a happy place with jungle gyms, stumps to climb on and a slide down to the next terrace for those who prefer speed to steps. But the best of all is the little people, and the knowledge that through this school, iThemba can further their vision to bring hope to the people of Mpumuza / Sweetwaters. Because we believe that good enough never is (really good enough), the school will be a centre of excellence where not only the attending children can receive top-quality education from dedicated staff, but also a place where other teachers can come to be inspired and trained and have access to teaching resources. This passionate horse rider is relentless in her participation in pony events and for good reason, she loves her ponies who perform excellently under her guidance. Josephine Clewlow, in Grade 5 at Laddsworth Primary School, headed for the podium once again at the Mane Events Dressage Show held at Mount Verde Equestrian Centre on 2 August with her pony Harcourts Highover Maria. Her results were as follows:

The story of 'La Rose' starts with Bruno Verbizier. It has been a lifelong dream of his to have a pub where he could entertain his friends and family. With this in mind, he began to build his dream using what he had available. Over the last three years he and his wife Noeline have turned a once abandoned barn into a wonderful venue. The dream took on a life of its own and now they are the proud owner of a venue which lends itself to any number of occasions and can seat up to 120 guests.
This year Sam Moore who is in Grade 7 at Laddsworth Primary School set his mind to cycling with focus and commitment. To date he has competed in the 25km Wartburg Illovo Classic, the 10km Cordwalles Mud Man, the 25km Ballito Sugar Rush Classic, the 25km Greytown MTB Classic, the 20km Karkloof Classic and most recently the 20km Sappi Howick Classic where he placed 7th overall and 1st in his age group with a time of 1:11:53 in a field of 132 cyclists.

The 2014 Grade 4 and 5 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School entered an Art Competition with the theme "What I want to be when I grow up" in October last year. Mr Wayne Pillay, branch manager from Liberty Group Ltd Financial Services presented a cheque for an amount of R15, 000.00 at Assembly. Laddsworth was honoured with this prize for submitting the most entries. Well done to last year's Grade 4 and 5's for their outstanding efforts.
Sven Lindeque competed in the Natal Open Clay Pigeon Competition this past weekend. On Saturday he shot 4 rounds to get a total of 42/100 and on Sunday scored a total of 49/100. Sven came 2nd in the Junior Division. Well done Sven!

The final event for the 24 Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa Finalists is fast approaching and is bound to be a spectacular evening. The Grand Finale is to be held at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg on the 12th September at 7:30pm. On the night the new Miss Teen, Miss, Mrs and Mr Commonwealth South Africa will be chosen after interviews and the modelling of evening wear, sports outfits and national costumes. Forty-one players put in tabs on Tuesday. Thanks to the generosity of our farming member, John Fowler the team of George Oldham, Etzel Nuss and Hamish Gerrard won giant-sized grapefruit. Thursday saw 30 players vying for grapefruit once again. Victors this time were Derick Hull, Arthur Daugherty and Vince Seale.

Jess Pinnel, Sigongakonke Maphumulo and Thina Dumalisile from St Anne's Diocesan College travelled to Johannesburg in the school holidays to compete in the annual Inter-Provincial Basketball Tournament where the KZN U18 Team finished 5th. When asked about the competition Jess recalls that "it was an amazing experience to be able to compete at that level, we learnt a lot". All of the provincial teams all stayed together in Hillbrow, an experience in itself, where they got to know each other off the court.

On Saturday our ladies' team for the Sanders Trophy playing at Umgeni suffered an outright defeat at the hands of Maritzburg. The Lambert Brothers team had a first round bye and met Collegians at Lynwood on Sunday morning. Hilton won this encounter and went across to Maritzburg West to play against Umgeni Waterfall. Only the fours were successful in this match winning by 28 – 8. Our congratulations to Umgeni on winning the Lambert Brothers Trophy.
Five Laddsworth hockey players participated in the Inter Districts Trials Festival played at St Charles and St Johns where they represented the UMgungundlovu District during May. Laddsworth Primary School is happy to share that they were all selected to represent KZN Inland Hockey.
Over half term, 6 boys travelled to Sodwana to complete their first open water dives. Before they reached this point in their diving they had to complete 9 quizzes on various topics such as physiology and physics, an exam, two very rigorous pool sessions, and then their sea dives.
