Dear Hilton Residents and Business Owners,

 

On Monday night last week, several areas experienced an Eskom initiated under frequency trip, due to supply constraint, largely as a result of the reduced supply from the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Scheme, which was out due to planned maintenance. We’ve been fortunate for some time now with regards to load shedding, but I’m afraid that it looks like we might be entering another phase of load shedding. Supply is likely to stay under pressure, because of plants needing to go offline for maintenance, so we need to be prepared.

 

At our last Chamber electricity meeting in July, we agreed that we would run a second trial. The reasons for doing this are as follows:
• Although we met the Eskom requirements for Stage 2 load shedding during the first trial, there were some questions about whether the load given on the day would be sustainable for the full period of load shedding in the future. Some businesses were incredible and gave 100% of their draw for example. The question is, would they be willing to give this capacity every time that load shedding is called for and for the full period of said load shedding without expecting some kind of compensation?
• And, secondly, while the vast majority of businesses contributed towards the trial, some businesses did not change their behaviour at all - and we are hoping that these businesses will contribute at least something in the future.

 

The objective of this final trial therefore, is to prove that we can voluntarily curtail our draw to meet Eskom’s requirement for Stage 2 shedding, by giving what is reasonable for each business to give for the full period of load shedding – i.e. that the curtailment is sustainable.

 

The date and time identified for the second trial is tomorrow, 29 September 2015. between 9am and 12pm.

 

For those 3 hours, all businesses in the city are requested to please switch off non-essential equipment and factories are being asked to ramp down their draw by at least the agreed 15%.

Last year Cedar Wood entered the garden show for the first time and we were so proud of our gold medal. After the hard work we said, "never again!" However when the email arrived it said that this year was a 5hr ready, steady plant so not as intense as last year. The theme was Symphony of Spring and we had to plan our concept and back drop beforehand. We spent ages trying to plan a garden design - to no avail. At cedar wood we really battle doing thing just for the sake of something or a mark with no real purpose in mind. Eventually we decided to create a garden that children could actually come into and play music. With that in mind the ideas were countless. We created a piano walk way to our beer bottle xylophone, cutlery and trampoline pipe chimes. The older boys cut and wired up the bigger chimes while the younger children made cutlery chimes. This involved many mathematical, measurement, design and tech, creative and planning skills. To pull in with the ABI recycling requirement we made numerous shakers and clappers, drums and such out of recycled bottles and tins. To top it all off we provided a music wall full of all sorts of recycled bits and pieces for the children to experiment with sound on.

Four Laddsworth Primary School pupils were awarded medals in the KZN Regional Championship of Abagility Maths held on Saturday, 12 September in Kloof. 270 pupils participated across various levels. Abagility teaches addition, subtraction, multiplication and division based on Japanese abacus maths techniques. Two papers were written, one using an abacus and a second paper using “anzan’’ which is mental arithmetic.

 

Jodi Moreno was awarded the Champion of Champions trophy. This is the second year running that Jodi has received this award. She has also been chosen to represent KZN in the Nationals Championship to be held in Gauteng in October. Reuben MacFarlane and Matthew Bishop were awarded Gold medals and Thomas Street won a Bronze Medal.

Nicolson’s Restaurant and Bar has won the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award 2016.

 

The awards ceremony was hosted at Katy's Palace Bar in Johannesburg. Guests were treated to a night of Joburg talent, cuisine and vibe at this stunning venue.

Cedar Wood facilitation Centre is very excited to announce that as of the 4th term 2015 we will be moving our premises out to the most beautiful farm in the Birnam Wood area. We will continue to create individual educational programs for children from 5 years old to grade 12.

Amanda Hardy is coming to Bella Donna in Hilton to offer you the pleasure of waking up beautiful with make-up.

 

Amanda Hardy, a CIBTAC qualified Aesthetician, has been in the Beauty Industry since 1999 and has been specialising in the art of Permanent make-up for the most part of her successful career, using the best in quality equipment and pigments.

 

Sam Moore in Grade 7 at Laddsworth Primary School had a fantastic result at the Nelson Mandela MTB race on Saturday 29 August. He finished sixth place overall and 2nd in his age group in the 21km race.

We ran three sponsored events this week. On Tuesday Chris Purchase, Anton Leisegang and Bev Davidge won chickens generously donated by the Quarry Spar. Thursday saw a small field of only 21 players contesting for vouchers from The Terrace Restaurant. Winners were Gil van der Hoven, Joan Byrom and Olga Hutt. Sincere thanks to The Terrace for their support.

 

Saturday’s competition was the annual Mixed Two Bowl Trips for the Surelink Trophy. We were pleased to welcome Rob Evans from Surelink who presented the trophy and a significant donation to club funds.

 

On Saturday evening at the NIBA prize giving it was announced that Margie Garrard has been selected to play at second in the President’s side and Thelma Mylne will skip the Ladies senior team in next year’s inter-provincial tournament. Our congratulations to these two ladies.

Other events planned for October include the Artisans 2-4-2 on 9th, a Chicken Run (15th), Artisans Roll (21st) and Terrace Trips on 22nd.

On Friday 25th September Tony Makris received subject awards for Maths, Science, Geography and Accounting as well as Dux for 2015. He also received a well-deserved award in recognition of his integrity and moral courage.

On Wednesday last week, the second session of the Artisan’s Roll was washed out. First session winners were Gert and Gwen Snyman and Pat Bailey. Lucky draw winners of other prizes were Basil Fann, Mike Hill and Ron McDonald. Thanks to Artisans and Nino's for their donations.

 

The only tabs-in bowls we managed to play was on Tuesday when forty members turned out to celebrate the re-opening of our green. It rained for the rest of the week.

 

Events on the horizon include The Terrace Trips on 24th and the Surelink Trophy on 26th.

Five St Anne's girls finished the Ngwenya Rough Water Canoe Race on Sunday. Sisters Stephanie and Caroline Wenke raced with their father, Bruce, and finished first in the three seater category; father-daughter team Alice & Mark Perrow finished fourth in the mixed double section; and cousins, Philippa and Kayla Asherwood, doubled up and finished second in the girls' under 18 category. An extraordinary effort from all the St Anne’s girls considering the difficulty of the river.

This year the Laddsworth Primary School Grade 7 play was based on ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, originally a 1960’s comedy horror movie which then became an Off Broadway musical production with subsequent revivals on screen and stage during the 1980’s.

 

Every Grade 7 pupil participated in the production, even the tech team were included in on-stage performances. Di Smythe did an excellent job of casting each child in a role that fitted their comfort zone, showcased their abilities or stretched them to the point of realising hidden talents. The hard work of her support team comprising many staff members as well as family and friends of Laddsworth is appreciated.

 

The unforgettable stars of the play that must bear mentioning are the family of plants, created by the Bullock family. These impressive 3D artworks added an element of awe and visual enjoyment to the performance. The backdrops crafted by Laurie Raubenheimer were perfectly suited to the storyline.

 

Four consecutive performances concluded in two full house evening shows. Audiences approved heartily of the entertainment presented.

R 1167.04 was collected in the Rhino campaign this year by Laddsworth Primary School pupils. They gathered these coins to donate to Rhino Rage in the fight against rhino poaching.

 

The Eco-Club made a money mile with all the coins. The ‘mile’ was 87 and a half metres long and the funds will be presented to Rhino Rage in an upcoming assembly.

Velocity Sports Lab, a state of the art gym currently based in Hout Bay, Cape Town, will be opening at the soon to be completed Hilton Life facility. We are looking to employee various fitness experts including a gym manager. The gym manager will be required to oversee all day to day running of the gym as well as its marketing and sales. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about the exercise industry, driven and able to work under their own guidance.
