In assembly on Monday 19 October, Brigid Ringdahl and Sarah Alcock from WESSA visited to educate pupils and staff about the exciting Water Explorer program that has taken SA schools on a journey to:

 

Complete water-based challenges on key water issues

Collaborate with other students across the world

Hold community water festivals and win points and prizes

Develop a range of transferable knowledge and skills

 

Laddsworth currently has 40 points and the challenge is on to improve the schools rankings against other schools in the country as they increase their water awareness and save water.

Your home may harbour all kinds of innocuous looking items that are actually dangerous to your pet.

 

Here are five toxic substances that can cause serious injury to your dog or cat that you may not haveknown about:

 

1. Garlic:

While garlic is actually good for your heal th as a human (say goodbye to cholesterol), it is dangerousif ingested by your pet. Garlic is not metabolised in the same way in animals as in people, as it causes damage to the red blood cells in the animal’s body. This can cause a mild to severe anaemia in the animal, depending on how much garlic has been ingested. The red blood cells carry oxygen around the body but if they are damaged and there are less circulating red blood cells in the bloodstream, the body becomes starved of oxygen. The symptoms can present as weakness, lethargy and pale gums. Unfortunately, there is a myth that feeding garlic to dogs prevents ticks from biting them. This is not true, and the tried and tested products avai lable at your vet are the only safe way to protect your pet from ticks and fleas.

 

2. Macedamia Nuts:

Macadamia nuts cause vomiting, unsteady walking, weakness, muscle tremors and fever in dogs. The dog needs to ingest more than 2 grams per ki logram of weight before signs start to show. Vomiting can be a serious threat to the health of smaller breeds of dogs as they lose a greater proportion of water and electrolytes in the vomit, which can lead to dehydration, low blood glucose, and weakness.

 

3. Grapes and Raisins:

Grapes and raisins can cause serious damage to kidneys in dogs. The signs of grape and raisin poisoning develop within 12 hours and present as vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. The amount needed to be eaten in order to cause poisoning varies from dog to dog as some dogs are more sensitive to the toxic effects than others.
This poisoning can be fatal so grapes and raisins should never be fed to your pet

 

4. Lillies:

Lillies are beautiful flowers to keep around the house and most people are unaware of the danger they pose to your pet if they are ingested. They cause severe kidney damage when eaten and your pet will need prompt veterinary treatment if you find them munching on these plants. Any part of the lily is toxic, even the leaves. Cats are known to chew on plants and we have treated a cat recently in our hospital for lily toxicity. If you do keep these flowers in your house or garden, make sure they are out of reach of the pets.

 

5. Cycads:

Cycad poisoning in dogs is common and it causes severe liver damage. All parts of the cycad plant are poisonous, but it is the seeds that puppies are tempted to play with as they resemble a toy that they can chase and chew. The plant contains a toxin called cycasin, which causes gut and liver poisoning. Signs to watch out for are vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia and lethargy. The liver often becomes so damaged that the dog cannot recover and the poisoning can be fatal. It is important to fence off these plants if they are growing in your garden.

The 2016 intake for Grade 1 at Laddsworth Primary School were welcomed to an Orientation Day today, 28 October 2015. Time spent in the classrooms and touring the school was enjoyed by all the little ones. Parents gathered for tea and an introductory presentation which highlighted some of the ‘need-to-know’ information that will prepare them for this new leg of their parenting journey.

Grace College celebrated the Class of 2015 recently during their Valediction Ceremony. It was a memorable evening as they were honoured for their contribution to the school during their tenure. Past Pupil, Jonathan Fraser, was the guest speaker and he encouraged all who were present to be someone of significance. Grace College congratulates all the Matrics who were awarded prizes on the evening. Mark Swanepoel (2015 deputy head boy) was announced the Dux of the school and was awarded no less than seven other trophies for his dedication to academics and school life. Ross Perrett (2015 head boy) was the recipient of the much sought after Headmaster’s award. Grace College wishes the Class of 2015 all the very best for their Final Examinations.

‘Do not paint it unless you have studied it, been chased by it or done something to save it.’ Says Andrew Bone a world famous wildlife artist who lives in Hilton. Andrew advocates that the emotional connection and knowledge of the subject an artist recreates is absolutely important to create visually believable work.

While we join many others in our desperate thirst for good soaking rains we have enjoyed the opportunities we have had to get onto the green and to play bowls. Attendances have been encouraging and we have had some excellent games. The drawn pairs match on Tuesday with Thelma Mylne and Fred Palmer pitted against Peter Bailie and Pat Bennet provided great enjoyment as the lead changed end after end. Someone had to lose, and Thelma and Fred pulled ahead in the last two ends to take the game. Congratulations and thanks to all four of you for the delightful entertainment.

 

The IF Trips tournament on Friday was won emphatically by Horse Beeching, Rita Aitkin and Jo Boonzaaier who opened up a gap of 30 shots over their opponents. In second place was the team of John Arnott, Tom Hartley and Neil Tainton. Well done to the winners and sincere thanks to Investment Facilitators for the meat hamper prizes.

 

Hilton’s positions in the league at the halfway stage are as follows: the ladies are in second place and both men’s teams are fifth out of six. We aim to work hard and move up the ladder in the latter part of the league to be played early next year.

 

Lists are on the board for the Christmas Cup and Bill’s Christmas Bash. These are both closed tournaments and entries will be limited so get your name down soon.

Cowan House Co-educational Preparatory School is looking for a warm, energetic Teacher’s Assistant in our Junior Primary. Morning showers made the green unplayable on Tuesday morning and we apologise to those who did not get the SMS due to a technical hitch. On Thursday we played the Terrace Trips competition. Drawn trips compete over 18 ends and the winners receive generous vouchers for a meal at the Terrace Restaurant. Winners this month by a large margin were Tom Hartley, Ingrid Oellermann and Andy Hitchcock. We extend our thanks to The Terrace for their support and congratulations to Tom, Ingrid and Andy.

 

The first round of the NIBA 2015-2016 league ended last Saturday. The second league team went to Maritzburg West and went down 5 -8. The third team played Umgeni Waterfall at Hilton and won 8 – 5.

 

Up-coming events include IF trips 6th November, Artisan’s 2-4-2 on 13th and Chicken Run on 14th. The Quarry Spar Christmas Cup tournament and Lunch are scheduled for 28th. Please watch the notice board for details.

During a 1st Team cricket match played at Laddsworth Primary School in Hilton on Saturday 24 October, against Clarendon Primary School, Andrew Beyrooti achieved 156 runs. Included in his big tally were 15 sixes and 13 fours.

 

This magnificent performance was applauded in assembly with the presentation of a new match ball and a mini bat trophy upon which Andrew’s name will be inscribed.

A good crowd of 36 players came to bowls on Tuesday. With no prizes on offer we were able to enjoy one another’s company and try some more ambitious shots. All good fun. Thursday saw some of our league players practising for the weekend’s matches. Although rain cut the session short we managed to try out a few new team selections.

 

The Artisan’s Roll on Wednesday was won by Chris Purchase, Fred Palmer and Neil Tainton. In second place were John Arnott, Anton Leisegang and Tony Barrington.

 

Lucky prize winners were Trevor Spring, Ian Fyvie and John Aubrey. Artisan’s and Ninos have been more than generous in their sponsorship for our competitions and we encourage our members to patronise these establishments.

 

The league game on Saturday were threatened by gathering clouds and some light rain but it cleared up and we could complete all the games. At home the second league team met Collegians. After close competition Collegians collected 7.5 points to Hilton’s 5.5. The thirds travelled to Richmond and went down 2-11.

 

The first round of league ends this coming weekend with the second team going to Maritzburg West while the thirds host Umgeni Waterfall.

 

The Terrace Drawn Trips Competition will be played on Thursday 29th October.
People playing in the drawn pairs competition must play their first round matches by Sunday 1st November.
