The main event of the past week was the IF Sponsored Trips on Friday. The field was reduced to ten teams as several regular participants were unable to play. First prize went to Fred Palmer with Dave and Margie Garrard. Visitors Horse Beeching, Margie Höll and Jo Boonzaier claimed the second place. Sincere thanks to Investment Facilitators for the prizes.

 

While only 14 players put in tabs on Tuesday due to the intense heat, we were nearly back to normal attendance on Thursday with five rinks of trips.

 

Dave Hammond, John Fowler and Ingrid Oellermann were rewarded on Saturday with bottles of wine for winning the competition based on three skins of six ends each. Well done.

 

This coming Friday will see us playing the last Artisan’s 2-4-2 for this year and Bill’s Christmas Bash will take place on Saturday. If the weather upsets our plans for bowls, the lunch time party will still go ahead.

 

Other games planned to the end of the year include Artisan’s Roll on 16th, Chicken Run (19th) and Terrace Trips on 24th.

 

The club will be open for normal tabs-in competitions over the holidays. Visitors are welcome to join us on Tuesday, Thursday in smart casual dress and Saturday afternoons in whites.

The annual 1st Team cricket season finale took place on Saturday 5 December at Laddsworth Primary School when the dads competed against the boys. The fierce competition ended in a win for the ‘Ladds’.

We have had a very busy week. Chris Purchase, Mike Guest, Shelagh Bowness, John Pattrick, Basil Fann and Pat Bennet all won chickens at tabs-in on Tuesday. Some of these prizes had been carried over from rain- disrupted competitions. Thanks, as ever, to Quarry Super Spar for their donations. Also on Tuesday we had another top-class match in the mixed drawn pairs with Thelma Mylne and Fred Palmer losing the semi-final to Jean Pluke and Andy Hitchcock in the very last end. Our congratulations to Jean and Andy who went on to win the Cecil Ford Trophy.

 

On Thursday we had a full entry for the Terrace Trips. Winners of generous vouchers were Fred Palmer, John Bayley and Henry Aucock. Well done chaps and thanks to The Terrace for their support.

 

Despite a wet start the Christmas Cup competition on Saturday went off smoothly. Winners of the trophy and vouchers from Quarry Super Spar were Jean Pluke, Shelagh Bowness and Arthur Daugherty. In second place were George Oldham, Des Morrish and Mike Guest. Winners of the losers were Chris Lake, Nina Guest and Etzel Nuss.

 

After the prize giving we all sat down to a wholesome lunch provided by Spar who continue to be wonderfully supportive.

 

On Sunday we hosted a visit from members of the Church of the Ascension as part of our Bowls Development initiative. About fifty people came along to enjoy some fun time together and to have a taste of the game we love. Several of the visitors indicated an interest in being coached.

In an important decision handed down by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria it was held that despite not being formally married in terms of the Civil Union Act, Pretoria painter Eric Duplan was the sole heir to the intestate estate of his life partner Cornelius Laubscher. The case reaffirmed the Constitutional Court decision in 2007 that the Intestate Succession Act must be read so as to include the interpretation that other words would follow the word spouse. These words would include “partner”.

Kelly Logan won an academic achievement certificate for her matric year. Kelly’s ongoing commitment to academic progress and incredible work ethic has been an inspiration and positive influence to all the students at Capulum College. Kelly was an exemplary head girl for 2015, showing excellence in Leadership and Good Citizenship, always caring for her fellow students with empathy and great kindness. Kelly, we wish you an extremely rewarding and fulfilling future and career ahead.

This year Laddsworth Primary School once again collected toys and stationary for the children who attend Siyabonga. Pat Kanzler from Siyabonga thanked the school in Assembly and left with a car boot loaded full of items which will be Christmas gifts for needy children in Edendale and Imbali.

During the holiday season crime tends to increase, our community can benefit from using WhatsApp for information and security reasons. Most of us know our neighbours well enough to greet when passing and as we all have busy lives this may be as much as we ever fit in.

 

In Winterskloof we have an effective WhatsApp system whereby each road nominates a Leader to manage two groups one for Information and the other for Security. Then each Administrator in turn belongs to a Leaders Group so that info which is VIP to all can easily be passed along when necessary. Keeping communications accurate and eliminating unnecessary chatter.

 

In my road this system has shared feedback on service delivery and non-delivery, found pets, warned of intrusions, circulated photos of abandoned of suspiciously parked vehicles and brought neighbours together for braais.

 

Our Administrator is Christel Klein who says, “WhatsApp is a great tool to share important information quickly in the community.

 

Our experience shows that it works most efficiently when residents of one street or neighbouring streets communicate in a Group. The group Administrator for the suburb then shares this information in a separate group and that way connects all areas/streets to spread security/emergency information quickly.

 

Most important is to keep messages short and to the point and to strictly separate social group chat from security related information as WhatsApp communication can get out of hand easily when the focus is not clearly communicated.”

 

If your street does not have a WhatsApp champion maybe it’s time for you to give your neighbours an unexpected Christmas gift. Use this opportunity to put names to strange faces and you could discover some new friends too!

What if Santa didn’t come just once a year? This is the question that Chrissie van Niekerk, Vodacom Change the World Volunteer at iThemba Projects, posed to the children at Epworth Primary school. Chrissie shared in their assembly about the fact that often we get excited about sharing and giving only at Christmas time, but don’t think about children in need at any other time of the year. But if children have a need for toys and games at Christmas, don’t they have a need year round?

How do you “prove” where you live for the purposes of FICA and why is it so important?

 

South Africa signed an International Protocol to try to counter Money Laundering and Terrorism. Included in this are measures designed to assist in preventing drug traffickers, smuggling for the sex-trade, terrorist operations and crime syndicates.

 

How does this affect you? Well many institutions require you to be FICA’D. In other words you must be properly identified.

 

In the case of an individual they should produce a Copy of their Identity Document or Passport or other suitable means of identification. These means of identification are set out in the Regulations of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act.

 

Proof of residence can prove a more vexed matter particularly in the case of farmers or persons living in rural areas. Various methods of proving a residential or fixed abode address may be employed. These include an Eskom or other official account which shows the Erf or Property description of the property where there is no fixed address, a letter from a Local Councillor who can identify the person and where they live. An Attorney is also what is known as an “Accountable Institution” which means that they can personally visit you at your abode and can then make a declaration to this effect.

 

In many instances people who are married have proof of residence in one of their names but the spouse has no such proof. In this instance there is a simple affidavit to be signed by the person who does have a utility bill or other official account in their name showing their residential address which both they and the person trying to prove their address must both sign before a Commissioner of Oaths and both parties must supply copies of their Identity Documents.

 

There are various other rules concerning the identity of Companies and Close Corporations and Trusts all of which have varying degrees of complexity and which must be treated slightly differently in each instance.

 

An accountable institution has a duty to report any suspicious activity which would include accepting cash payments over a certain amount (currently R25 000,00).

On Wednesday the rain held off long enough for us to get a clear result in the Artisan’s Roll. Winners were Dennis Larivière, Peter Freer and Trish Elliot. Runners-up, who received vouchers from Ninos were Trevor Spring, Ken Hooper and Pam Spring. Thanks once again to Artisans and Ninos for their sponsorship.
None of our other tabs-in days reached the full quota of ends. Tuesday saw John Arnott, Bill McQuade and Ingrid Oellermann taking home exclusive bars of chocolate for their efforts.

 

On Saturday with a smaller crowd and dismal prospects, we decided to withhold the chicken prizes for another day. Play petered out after about 8 or 9 ends.
We hope for better weather in the coming week, which, if the gods favour us will end with the Quarry Spar Christmas Cup and lunch. Regardless of the weather, the lunch will go ahead, and those who booked for the meal are all expected to pay whether they attend or not.

 

Please remember the Development Day on Sunday at about 10:30. We will need lots of help from members.

Grace College’s Grade 9 and 12 pupils participated in the Wildlands “Clothes 4 Life” campaign this year. The response from our pupils was great and many bags of second-hand clothing were filled. Wildlands’ Community Activations Manager, Siphindile Moloi, collected the bags for distribution to participating individuals in disadvantaged communities, who in turn sell or barter the clothes. Grace College is grateful for the opportunity given to participate in this worthy cause.
