Andy Hitchcock won his semi-final match on Saturday afternoon and was well ahead in the final. Unfortunately he then dropped four shots and lost concentration, eventually losing 21 – 14. You played well Andy and we are proud of you.

The Artisan's Pizzeria 2-4-2 tournament was won by Mike and Thelma Mylne. In second place were Mike and Janet Fairhurst with Jean and John Pluke coming in third. Thanks to Artisan's, Valverite and Wedgewood for the prizes.

Activities on Saturday morning kicked off with a "Spider". The badge was won by Peter Bailie and we collected over R300 for the Blind Bowlers Association.

The tussle for the Harry Cooper Cup was won by Tom Hartley, John Pluke and Pat Bennet. Chris Purchase, Des Morrish and Arthur Daugherty came second. Fred Palmer, Janet Fairhurst and Basil Fann were the winners of the losers. Well done to all the winners and sincere thanks to Hilton Quarry Super Spar for providing prizes and a wonderful lunch.

Laddsworth Primary School's Jenna Cornelius achieved a merit with 82% for her vocal exam in March. This Grade 1 Vocals exam was taken with Tracy Stark's internationally recognised Rockschool.

The Grace College Masihambisane (Let's Walk Together) Basketball Outreach Clinic took place on Saturday, the 2nd of May. Fourteen young men from a variety of Community High Schools were invited to attend the clinic. The clinic was intended to upskill and develop these young men in Basketball, emphasising the opportunities available in this sport. All the players thoroughly enjoyed themselves and gained much from all the coaches. Grace College would like to thank Greg Downes (Hilton Quarry Super Spar) for providing the t-shirts, lunch and snacks as well as Sam Nkosi (Masihambisane co-ordinator), for being an invaluable liaison between the schools. Grace College will be facilitating more clinics to these surrounding schools on an ongoing basis through Basketball, Netball and Soccer.

It is the new season of MasterChef Laddsworth and Rachel Bromley included the fruity flavours of a tropical island to brighten up her gourmet creation. In the first stage of this challenge Grade 6 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School make their own bread from scratch and then use it to construct a sandwich. This innovative learning experience is an annual highlight for the children and a test for their teachers who must sample all the sandwiches.

We are delighted to have been selected by the Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) panel for a €390 000 project to help create a sustainable commercial biogas plant.

This project, which includes a significant contribution by Renen, will enable us to pilot the roll-out of an Induced Blanket Reactor (IBR) anaerobic biogas digester at a dairy farm in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Midlands, South Africa.

The Midlands Biogas Project (MBP) responds to multiple problems currently faced at animal husbandry farms throughout South and southern Africa. Poor waste management practice currently results in extensive GHG emissions and damage to water resources (namely pollution and eutrophication). In addition, these farms face other problems like poor energy supply, and increasing production costs in the form of energy (electricity) and chemical fertilisers.

This project proposes a solution which is scalable, modular and innovative for viable applications in a variety of small to medium dairy (and pig) farms. The IBR digester will provide a reliable and affordable alternative for energy (heat and electricity) and an environmentally friendly superior fertiliser for crop and pasture production.

Representatives from Singakwenza, a local non-profit organisation that focusses on the importance of Early Childhood Development, visited our assembly recently. As part of their programme, Singakwenza teaches how to make educational toys from waste. Pupils helped to demonstrate ball catching (with balls made from bread bags), skipping with ropes made from bread bags and ring toss (using yoghurt containers and lids). They learned how these games teach counting, sharing, patience and coordination skills.

On behalf of the Laddsworth Eco-Committee, Bianca Boshoff, pledged assistance in collecting the required items such as bread bags and bottle tops, she also expressed their interest in learning more about how to make these amazing toys from waste.

In consultation with the contractor, the dates for the resurfacing of Hilton Avenue at the Monzali Intersection will take place on Wednesday 13th – Thursday 14th May 2015. During this period this section of road will operate on a single lane with STOP/GO signs. The order of work will be to apply primer, lay the Sealmac and then pave asphalt. The contractor will again ensure sufficient flagmen and signs are up and we request the community to be patient and not jump the signs.

You may have noticed that the potholes in this section was repaired this week, also functioning on a STOP/GO arrangement and was successful. I trust the community will bear with us for one last major interruption next week, as we will only have painting left before the opening of the intersection and hospital.

The Care Bear Project is a Hilton based initiative founded by Rebecca Pinnell, a St Anne's old girl who is currently doing her second year B.Accounting at Stellenbosch. This concept took shape when Rebecca was submitting a proposal to Nedbank for a sustainable community project.

The project sells kits which enable knitters to craft bears, the knitters are paid for their work and the bears are then presented to children through crèches in the area.

Each kit costs R400.00 and makes six bears. Of the R400.00, R100.00 covers the cost of the wool, needles, sewing needle, stuffing, pattern, bag etc. and then R300.00 is paid to the knitter when she returns the bears. So it's a double-ended benefit; payment to the lady who knits the bears and then the distribution of the bears themselves. Their first target is 108 bears for a crèche in Lidgetton which is where the first knitters live, and they thought it would be good for their community to benefit from the first distribution.

The Care Bear Project is collecting the next batch of bears this week and should then have about 50 bears!

The Care Bear Project has already paid R2 500.00 to their first four knitters in the first three weeks of launching the project! Word is spreading among the community members and last week they handed out another 10 kits.

We will ensure that we are NBT "compliant" where appropriate and if anyone is keen on AP Maths and AP English they must let us know ASAP so that we can make arrangements for these subjects to be offered as well. Andy Hitchcock continued his good form in the NIBA Novices' Singles on Saturday taking both games and progressing to the next round.

The Harry Cooper Cup competition takes place this Saturday with play starting at 08:30. The entry is fully subscribed, but anyone still looking for a game should speak to Dave Garrard as we sometimes need a reserve. The competition will be followed by a lunch provided by the Quarry Spar.

The monthly Artisan's 2-4-2 competition will be played on Friday 8th May.

St Anne's Matric Student, Shannon Kennedy, won the Victor Ludorum at the Shongweni Festival for the 120/125cm category last month. Her instructor, Deidre Fox, says it is almost unheard of to go up the Showjumping grades as fast as Shannon has. At the beginning of 2014 she had just started jumping 90cm; now just a year later she is competing 120cm against both Juniors and Adults.

To mark World Book and Copyright Day at Laddsworth Primary School , Grade 1 pupils and teachers came to school wearing outfits based on characters from Lewis Carroll's books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. While Alice and The Hatter were the most popular choices of outfit, The Queen of Hearts, The White Rabbit, the Dormouse and Tweedledum and Tweedledee also made numerous appearances. They brought treats and enjoyed a tea party together.
